League: Hotel League Team

History: South Florida in the early 20th Century may seem like an unusual locale for early Black baseball, but Sinclair Oil founder Harry Flagler decided to build baseball fields at two of his hotels, the Royal Poinciana, and the Breakers in Palm Beach. Players were recruited from hotel employees - Waiters, busboys, and porters. The Royal Giants traveled all over the state competing in an informal “hotel league” and became one of the top clubs of the independent era that existed before 1920.
